Methodology
Which schools we rank
Every ranking and collection on CollegeCove draws from the same set of schools: institutions the U.S. Department of Education classifies as degree-granting and primarily baccalaureate or above. That deliberately excludes community colleges, including the ones that award a small number of bachelor's degrees, along with vocational schools, graduate-only institutions, and single-subject schools such as seminaries, medical schools and conservatories. It also excludes institutions where most undergraduates study exclusively online, because a ranking built on campus life should describe a campus. Branch campuses of larger universities are included even though Carnegie does not classify them separately.
Top Beach-Town Colleges
Schools must be within 10 miles of the nearest ocean beach. Only 4-year degree-granting institutions are included. Ranked by total enrollment (largest first) so the most well-known beach schools appear at the top.
Top Ski-Town Colleges
Schools must be within 25 miles of a resort with at least 150 skiable acres, or within 10 miles of any ski hill regardless of size. Only 4-year degree-granting institutions are included. Ranked by total enrollment (largest first) so the most well-known ski-town schools appear at the top.
Top Lake Life Colleges
Schools must be within 10 miles of a major inland lake (3,000+ acres). Only 4-year degree-granting institutions are included. Ranked by total enrollment (largest first) so the most well-known lake life schools appear at the top.
D1 Schools with Ski & Beach Access
Schools must be NCAA Division I, within 10 miles of the nearest ocean beach, AND within 25 miles of a ski resort. Ranked by total enrollment largest-first.
Selective Colleges Near Ski & Beach
Schools with a published acceptance rate of 25% or lower, ranked by total enrollment largest-first. Beach and ski distances are shown for reference. Only schools with a reported acceptance rate are included.
Surf & Ski Colleges
Schools must meet both thresholds: within 10 miles of the nearest ocean beach AND within 25 miles of a ski resort. Only 4-year degree-granting institutions are included. Ranked by total enrollment largest-first.
Most Affordable Colleges
Schools must have published out-of-state tuition under $15,000 per year. We use the out-of-state figure deliberately: in-state pricing makes a school look cheap only if you happen to live in the right state. Included institutions are 4-year, not for-profit, and traditional degree-granting colleges: doctoral, master's or baccalaureate. Community college systems that grant a small number of bachelor's degrees are excluded, as are special-focus institutions such as seminaries, medical schools and conservatories. Institutions where more than 50% of undergraduates are enrolled exclusively in distance education are excluded. Ranked by undergraduate enrollment, largest first.
Campus safety scores
Safety scores use U.S. Department of Education Clery Act data, averaged over 2021-2023 and normalized per 1,000 enrolled students. Clery figures depend on how each school counts and reports incidents, so compare schools with that in mind.

Everything underneath our rankings comes from public sources: IPEDS and the College Scorecard from the U.S. Department of Education, NOAA climate normals, the NCAA schools directory and Clery Act campus safety data. See every source and survey year.
